Outwitting a Reluctant Eater

As a pup Tzuri was a holy terror who intimidated her litter mates and scarfed down all the food when she could.  These days for some unaccountable reason I have to coax her to eat.

But she still loves to fetch so I hit upon a plan.

Tzuri w/ food bowl

I just toss her toy into her food bowl and each time she chases after it she will nibble a bite or two before bringing it back.

😀 😀 😀

  1. They so capture our hearts that any worry feels like a seizure.
Brilliant solution on your part. I’d guess her metabolism is going through some adjustment based on weather and exercise, and that she’s still growing. She looks marvelously healthy. A bit of bacon grease on the kibble has considerable appeal. Or mix in some kidneys from the butcher shop. Both stinky in the best way.

    1. I was thinking this is the time of her life when she should hit a growth spurt and fill out but she has only gained three pounds in the last three months. But she gets an almost excessive amount of exercise and is as healthy as can be, so I guess I shouldn’t worry. 😀

  2. Judging by the look of her coat, she’s healthy enough. I suspect they sometimes are just off and we worry far too much. Though I’d probably get mighty bored if all I got was dry kibble. Sissy gets dehydrated liver bits for her treats. Those are for high motivation in training. She’ll do anything for them. I first came across them when our previous pup came up slightly anemic.

    1. Tzuri goes through tons of high value “training rewards” which are smaller and not as flaky as regular “treats” That’s because in training you want to slip them to her and not have her break stride to chew them. Her regular food, which she always scarfed down, is 80% raw meat, steamed, so-called ‘biologically appropriate.’ But who knows, dogs have their own standard of reference. 🙂
