Cute & Savvy

taos pueblo beggar girls

These two little Native American Indian girls were so cute! They had a wad of dollars in their hands and they were going around asking everyone for money. So I told them if I could take their picture I would give them a dollar.

Well, they ran over to pose by that wall, a little further away than I wanted, given that I had a wide-angle lens that struggled to reach that far. Then when I started to hand them a dollar, they said (with irresistible smiles) that I owed them two dollars, one each!

  1. I remember the purples and turquoise of the Navajo, and the look of dry desolation beneath those spectacular wide open skies. The children are cute and savvy. I like the One Dollar Each business. There’s a lovely bit in Lawrence of Arabia when two young tribal boys are negotiating with him for work using the identical technique.

    1. The irony as I see it is that I paid ten dollars to get into this village, then six dollars just to take my camera with me, and then . . . another two to these girls! 🙂
